Jerry the Movie

a documentary by MALCOLM LEO

In the summer of 1987, renowned filmmaker Malcolm Leo sat down with Grateful Dead founding member and cultural hero Jerry Garcia.

The occasion was to record a few comments for Rolling Stone Magazine’s twentieth anniversary special, which Leo was producing and directing for ABC Television. It turned into so much more.

For more than two hours Jerry responded to Leo’s questions from the bottom of his heart. At the height of his success and in the midst of his happiest days, Jerry Garcia opened his mind and revealed his soul. Captured on 16mm film by Russell Carpenter, the Academy Award© winning cinematographer of Titanic, the footage has remained in Leo's vault untouched for all these years. The interview presents Garcia discussing his life, music, family and friends. He is brilliant, charming, joyful and free. It’s Jerry Garcia as you have never seen him before.

The film will include never-before-seen footage, photographs, rare performances, family memorabilia and home movies. Plus new interviews and location filming.

The Director, Malcolm Leo is one of the preeminent rock-and-roll filmmakers with over thirty years of writing, directing and producing experience. He has produced and directed films such as "This Is Elvis" for Warner Brothers, "It Came From Hollywood" for Paramount, "Beach Boys, An American Band" for Lionsgate, "Crosby Stills and Nash: Long Time Comin" for Rhino, "Will Rogers: A Look Back in Laughter" for HBO, "Happy Days Reunion", for ABC (Highest rated retrospective special in TV history), and "Rolling Stone Presents Twenty Years of Rock & Roll."
